on everyone’s mind: Is Sora AI actually coming out by the end of August? If you’re like me, you’ve probably been following the rumors, and I’ll be honest, I’m skeptical. We’ve been hearing about this "release date" for a while now, and it’s already been six months of waiting. So, will it happen? Let’s just say, I wouldn’t count on it.
First of all, Sora has been teased as this next-level AI tool for creating text-to-video content. Naturally, everyone’s excited, but the more I dig into it, the less confident I am that we’ll actually see it anytime soon. Sure, we’ve got Runway V3, Pika, and other tools that are kind of doing the job right now, but none of them are blowing me away. In fact, I’ve been experimenting with these tools—Runway V3, in particular—and while they’re getting better, we’re still in that weird “Will Smith eating pasta” stage of AI video creation (if you know, you know).
Why I’m Doubting Sora’s Release
So, why do I think Sora won’t make its August debut? For starters, we’ve heard this rumor before. Dates have been tossed around, and nothing solid has come out yet. If it does get released, I’m willing to bet it’ll come with some hefty subscription fees and a lot of limitations—like only being able to generate 10-second clips at a time, which is the case with Runway V3. I don’t know about you, but I’m not looking to spend big bucks for something that’s still going to need loads of refining.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not against paying for good tech—I’ve dropped money on Runway V3’s subscription already. But if I’m shelling out cash, I need the tech to be ready for prime time, and frankly, I’m not convinced Sora will be up to snuff. If anything, we’ll probably see something that requires a ton of processing power and still leaves us wanting more.
Current AI Tools: A Quick Rundown
While we wait for Sora, we’ve still got a handful of AI tools to play around with. I’ve been using Runway V3 for a while now, and yeah, it’s decent, but it’s not groundbreaking. I’ve also dabbled with Pika, and to be honest, none of these tools are really there yet for full-blown AI video creation. For now, I’m sticking with my still-image AI creations for music videos. They’re more reliable, and I’ve got a whole vibe going with the patina-style record albums over on Praise Me Vinyl.
But here’s the thing: I’ve been hearing whispers from friends in the AI space about how everyone’s rushing to create actual videos using text-to-video AI, and it got me curious. After doing some research and trying things out myself, I’ve realized that we’re not quite at the point where AI video generation is something I’d use in my day-to-day content creation—at least, not yet.
What We Can Expect from Sora
If Sora does drop soon, I expect it to be a pretty expensive subscription, and probably not all that accessible. It’s likely going to demand a lot of resources to run, meaning we’ll either need to invest in serious hardware or rely on cloud-based processing—which, as we all know, ain’t cheap. And let’s be real here, do we really think they’re going to offer a free version that’s worth anything? My guess is no.
For those of us who are making music videos or other creative content, it’s going to be a toss-up. You could try squeezing out 10-second clips and splicing them together, but that’s going to get old (and expensive) real fast. So, while I’m excited to see what Sora can do, I’m keeping my expectations in check. I think we’re still a good ways off from using AI-generated video the way we’re all dreaming of.
The Verdict: Should You Hold Out for Sora?
If you’re like me, constantly testing the waters with new AI tech, it’s probably worth trying Sora when it comes out—if for no other reason than curiosity. But don’t expect miracles. AI video generation is still in its infancy, and while it’s improving, we’re not at the point where we can replace traditional video production. Not yet, anyway.
In the meantime, I’ll keep playing around with what’s available, and I’ll let you know if anything blows my mind. But as far as this August release? I’ll believe it when I see it. And it has just flipped over to September. So I don't believe it.
